So you want to perform at Chicks with Picks, hooray! No audition/demo/frat-style induction necessary, but we do have a couple of guidelines that you need to be aware of.
Firstly, Chicks with Picks is, essentially, an acoustic open mic night focusing on local female talent. This does not mean that there can’t be any dudes on stage, in fact they’re quite welcome, so long as your act is lady-fronted. What this does mean, however, is that we’re not currently set up for full, plugged in bands. Acoustic guitars with pickups are welcomed with open arms (and jacks) and we’ve got mics for your vox. Keys are no worries also, and raw bass can be put through the system. If you must have your electric with pedals and plugins or a laptop you will need to bring your own amp to avoid overloading the system. As far as drums go: absolutely NO FULL KITS and NO STICKS. Mini kits with brushes are okay, as a bongos, djembes etc.
Also keep in mind that as it’s an open mic event the sets are quite short. Not only does this enable us to give as many people as possible the opportunity to flash their wares, but it keeps up the momentum of the event and keeps the punters interested. Standard set times are: 15 minutes for solos and duets, 20 mins for acts of 3 or more. Keep in mind that you’ve only got 2 minutes to set up and 2 minutes to pack up so be prepared, tuned and ready to go when you’re number is called.
Still keen as mustard to perform? Brilliant, we’d love to have you. Now all you need to do is shoot through the following deets and/or any questions you might have to hayley@chickswithpicks.com.au:
