Sydney Film Festival’s Sneak Peak and FlexiPasses on Sale
06. April 2011

Sydney Film Festival has announced a cross-section of films in the lead-up to taking over the city’s silver screens from Wednesday June 8 to Sunday June 19.

Festival Director Clare Stewart relishes Sydney Film Festival’s role in championing ‘new directions in film’: “Our award criteria encourages the world’s filmmakers to be bold, adventurous risk-takers; to strive for the unique and the unexpected. Our annual search for international excellence uncovers some exceptional cinema and we can’t wait to show Sydney-siders in June.”

Among the first films to confirm a place in the festival is:

All About Love

Director: Ann Hui | Starring: Sandra Ng, Vivian Chow, Eddie Cheung | Hong Kong

Queer Hong Kong gets a mainstream makeover in Ann Hui’s sparkling romantic comedy, which features more relationship permutations than an episode of Modern Family. Bisexual Macy (Sandra Ng) is a free-spirited lawyer who reignites a relationship with Anita (Vivian Chow) when they meet at pre-natal yoga class – both of them accidentally pregnant from incidental affairs.

Australian Premiere

FlexiPass tickets are now on sale. They are a convenient and affordable way to choose-your-own SFF adventure, available in 10, 20 or 30 film passes that you can share with your friends and save. To purchase FlexiPasses and to check out the full selection of teaser films, www.visitsff.org.au

The full program for SFF 2011 will be revealed on Wednesday 11 May 2010.

Chick BOOM! Band Comp
10. March 2011

Introducing the very first Chick BOOM! Band Comp.

Running from April 28th through June 11th, this competition is an alternative to the male-dominated Band Comp environment at the current time. We have recently secured seven dates at the Sandringham Hotel in Newtown to run the comp, with the first heat kicking off on April 28th. The Chick BOOM! Band Comp will be run and judged in a completely new manner, with two final Prize Winners:

Major Prize Winner judged by industry folk with scoring based not only on the obvious; talent, stage presence, originality etc, but also on the slightly less obvious; punctuality, professionalism, marketing and online presence.
Peoples Choice judged by punters, upon entry each person will be presented with a voting card to be returned to the ballot box.

If you’re in a chick fronted band and would like to compete, send the following details to hayley[at]chickswithpicks.com.au:

  • Name
  • Contact number
  • Band/Stage name
  • Performance style
  • Set up needed (if necessary)
  • Link to music/video/other example of your work

Check out the official facebook event HERE.

More details to come very shortly!

Feature Artist – Maxine Kauter
09. March 2011

Introducing Maxine Kauter, the all encompassing front-lady of Maxine Kauter band. With a voice described by Drum media as “a cross between Sarah Blasko and Mazzy Star, mellow and enchanting”, she’s definitely one we’re keeping our eyes on. Scroll to the bottom for a free download and don’t forget to join us at the Raval on March 17th for the launch of Alibech the Hermit.

When did you start performing?

I started playing live shows in 2005 when a friend of mine practically beat me over the head to play at a show. She got me a gig and I realised I was a whore for the warm womb of the stage.

Who do you perform with?

MKB is officially a three piece with ridiculously talented Shannon Haritos on double bass and the equally talented and infinitely more smiley Stephen Beverley. Possibly two of the greatest friends I’ll ever have. At our album launch we will be a six piece with Dave Learn and Pete Holtz who recorded the album with us and Zoe Vaughan and Brett Every who are wonderful singers.

What should a punter expect at a gig?

Something like Cat Power meeting Neko Case. It’s wallowy literate music interspersed with some silly in-between-song talking. On the 17th we will also have Danica Lee, Miss Burlesque Sydney, performing.

What are you working on at the moment?

We are launching our new record Alibech the Hermit. Everyone has been very nice about it including Chicks With Picks, the Brag, FBI and so many other people showing us love so we’re having a grand old time. We’re also working on some songs for the next record.

What is your most memorable moment in your music career?

Hmm, maybe having Mia Dyson send me an email telling me what she thought of the first CD. That was pretty great. And also playing the support spot for Bluehouse at the Factory as part of Mardi Gras one year. That was also great.

Who’s your musical idol and why?

That is such a hard one. There are so many. Right now I’d say PJ Harvey. I’m listening to her non stop. She’s just such an incredible songwriter, singer and guitarist and she has this truly female energy that is all hers and completely unselfconscious and uninhibited. I think that is rarer in female performers than male and something to aspire to.

Anything else you want to share

Our music. It’s available for free online here: http://soundcloud.com/maxinekauter and everyone who comes to our launch on 17 March at Raval can get a free physical copy.
