Introducing Maxine Kauter, the all encompassing front-lady of Maxine Kauter band. With a voice described by Drum media as “a cross between Sarah Blasko and Mazzy Star, mellow and enchanting”, she’s definitely one we’re keeping our eyes on. Scroll to the bottom for a free download and don’t forget to join us at the Raval on March 17th for the launch of Alibech the Hermit.
When did you start performing?
I started playing live shows in 2005 when a friend of mine practically beat me over the head to play at a show. She got me a gig and I realised I was a whore for the warm womb of the stage.
Who do you perform with?
MKB is officially a three piece with ridiculously talented Shannon Haritos on double bass and the equally talented and infinitely more smiley Stephen Beverley. Possibly two of the greatest friends I’ll ever have. At our album launch we will be a six piece with Dave Learn and Pete Holtz who recorded the album with us and Zoe Vaughan and Brett Every who are wonderful singers.
What should a punter expect at a gig?
Something like Cat Power meeting Neko Case. It’s wallowy literate music interspersed with some silly in-between-song talking. On the 17th we will also have Danica Lee, Miss Burlesque Sydney, performing.
What are you working on at the moment?
We are launching our new record Alibech the Hermit. Everyone has been very nice about it including Chicks With Picks, the Brag, FBI and so many other people showing us love so we’re having a grand old time. We’re also working on some songs for the next record.
What is your most memorable moment in your music career?
Hmm, maybe having Mia Dyson send me an email telling me what she thought of the first CD. That was pretty great. And also playing the support spot for Bluehouse at the Factory as part of Mardi Gras one year. That was also great.
Who’s your musical idol and why?
That is such a hard one. There are so many. Right now I’d say PJ Harvey. I’m listening to her non stop. She’s just such an incredible songwriter, singer and guitarist and she has this truly female energy that is all hers and completely unselfconscious and uninhibited. I think that is rarer in female performers than male and something to aspire to.
